The library's story began in 1903 when Anne Draper, a Louisiana bookseller and advocate for public education, championed the idea of a free public library for the community. She joined with local citizens including William P. Stark, Isadore Michael, and A. J. Murphy Sr. to organize the effort.
Established in 1905, the Louisiana Public Library is a historic Carnegie library and one of the first ten Carnegie libraries built in Missouri. Funded by a $10,000 grant from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie and constructed from locally quarried Louisiana limestone, the library has served the community for more than a century. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it continues its mission of providing free access to information, education, and lifelong learning for residents of Louisiana and the surrounding area.
